A new series of fog catchers has been installed on a hilltop near Lima, bringing fresh water to the desert communities of Valle Ecologico and Urucancha. This initiative, fully financed by Children of Lima and built by local community members, addresses a crucial water scarcity issue in a region that receives almost no rainfall.
From May to October, dense fog blankets the area, creating a unique opportunity to gather water using fog catchers. These structures can collect up to 8 liters of water per square meter of net each foggy day, channeling it into three large reservoirs built last year.
The collected water can be made safe to drink via a simple filtration process, and is also used to support small-scale agriculture and hygiene. Local mothers use some of the water to cultivate cactus plants, which they can sell at local markets to supplement their income.
Additionally, the water helps supply two small showers installed last year, providing improved hygiene for residents.
This innovative project is another powerful example of teamwork between Children of Lima and local communities, using sustainable technology to bring essential resources to families in need.
